Questions, Answered
The questions we get asked most. If yours is not here, call 613-298-9999.
Lost keys and replacement
Can you make a car key if I have lost all of them?
Yes. An all keys lost job does not require an existing key to copy. We identify your vehicle, cut a new key, program it and test it before you pay.
Do you need the original key to make a spare?
No, but having one makes the job simpler and quicker. Cutting a spare from a working key is a straightforward job. Starting from nothing means retrieving the vehicle's security data and pairing from scratch, which takes longer.
Someone stole my keys. Can you stop them being used?
On most vehicles, yes. When we program your new key we can delete the missing ones from the vehicle's memory so they will no longer start the car. Tell us this when you call, because it changes what we do.
My key turns but the car will not start. Is that the key?
Usually it is the immobiliser rather than the lock. The blade fits and turns, but the chip in the key is not being recognised. It can be a failed transponder, lost programming, or a fault in the vehicle's receiver. We diagnose which before replacing anything.
Fobs and programming
I bought a key fob online. Can you program it?
Often yes. Two cautions. It has to be the right part and frequency for your exact vehicle, and some cheaper units cannot be programmed at all no matter what the listing said. Call us with the part details and your year, make and model before booking.
My fob stopped working. Is it broken or just the battery?
Start with the battery, since it is the cause more often than not and it is the cheapest thing to rule out. If a fresh battery does not fix it, it is usually worn button contacts, a cracked case letting moisture in, or a board that failed after a soaking. We will tell you plainly when a fob is not worth repairing.
What is the difference between a transponder key, a remote head key and a smart key?
A transponder key is a cut metal key with a security chip inside that the car has to recognise before it will start. A remote head key is the same thing with the lock and unlock buttons built into the head rather than on a separate fob. A proximity or smart key is the push to start type that stays in your pocket, where the car detects the key nearby rather than needing it inserted. They differ in the equipment needed and how long programming takes, and our pricing page lists each one.
Where we work, and cost
Do I come to you, or do you come to me?
Whichever suits you. We are in Gloucester at Ogilvie Road and Montreal Road, and work done there is charged at the prices listed on our pricing page. If you would rather we came to your vehicle, mobile service starts at $60 and rises with distance, which we confirm on the phone before we set out.
Why do you publish prices when most locksmiths do not?
Because the most common complaint about this trade is being quoted one number and charged another. Publishing what we charge means you can judge us before you call, and it means we have to stand behind the number. Our full list is on the pricing page.
How much is the mobile charge?
It starts at $60 and rises by distance band depending on how far we travel to reach you. We work out which band you are in and tell you the number on the phone before we set out, and it does not change when we arrive.
How do I pay?
Payment is taken once the key is cut, programmed and tested in front of you. Never before.
Should I get a spare cut before I need one?
Yes, and it is the best value work we do. Cutting a spare while you still have a working key is a much simpler job than replacing everything after the last one is gone, so it costs considerably less and takes less time. Almost everyone who calls us in an emergency says they had been meaning to sort a spare.
Coverage and the company
How fast can you get to me?
Most visits are arranged in 1 hour or less. Call, tell us where the vehicle is, and we will give you a realistic time.
What areas do you cover?
The Ottawa area from our Gloucester base, including Orleans, Vanier, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Manotick, Cumberland and Rockland, plus Gatineau across the river. We also travel to outlying areas including Carleton Place, Cornwall and Brockville, and we have gone as far as Pakenham and Kingston for customers, so if you are outside the city it is worth asking.
Do you cover Gatineau and the Quebec side?
Yes. Mobile service covers Gatineau, charged by distance like anywhere else.
How long have you been doing this?
Since 2021, with 47 five star Google reviews from customers across the Ottawa area.
What vehicles do you work on?
Twenty six makes covering almost everything on Ottawa roads, from domestic trucks through Asian and European models to push to start systems. The full list is on our brands page.
What if the key does not work?
You do not pay. We test everything in front of you before payment, so the guarantee is built into the order things happen rather than something you would have to chase us about.
